I just saw Nausicaa: the Valley of the Wind for the first time, a few weeks ago. It’s one of those Miyazaki movies. Big budget animated feature. Awesome movie. The animation is a bit more primitive than some of his later films but still pretty amazing. I don’t usually do this kind of thing lately, because it triggers my nerd-shame editor mind, but this time I composed a piece inspired by this film and freely admit to it.

The setting is all-the-way scifi fantasy. In the post apocalyptic future, much of the Earth becomes covered in forests of massive trees. The forests are full of poison spores and gargantuan insect monsters. Human beings are forced to live in the deserts, but there are a few who venture into the forest to try to learn its secrets.

Nausicaa navigates through the Forest with the aid of a small, rocket-powered, winged conveyance, fueled by scifi magic. How great is that?

Gliding through the Poison Forest

Years ago, when I first started using fruity loops, I did a bunch pieces where the composition was very step-sequenced from small individual parts. Each part was simple and repetive, but I would plot-out variations in the arrangement, making the piece complex overall. The sound was very techno-ish.

Eventually I learned to use the piano roll where I could plot notes over whatever range of measures I wanted. Fruity loops was no longer just a sequencer, but also a full music-writing tool. I started writing real melodies and backing parts, but the arrangement contained less variations in instrument sounds, and lacked the thickness that my previous compositions had. Additionally, back when I used fruity loops as a step sequencer I threw in non-melodic synth noises that fit rhythmically and these were gone from my later compositons.

For this piece I tried to use a hybrid of both approaches, and I like the result. This is the most complex project that I’ve done in Fruity Loops for a very long time.

I just got a new computer. My older one bit the dust during the big blizzard here in athens. I discovered this when coming home after 5 days without power and turning everything on again for the first time. Fortunately I have a back-up hard drive so I didn’t really lose any important data. But I did have to reinstall all of software and periphories and see if they work under the dreaded Vista 64.

Well not everything is perfect, but I was able to install FL, tracktion and most of my plugins. Here are the results of my test run. It’s an unfinished little sketch. I like it though, and will probably use it for something. Here I’m trying to get the usual retro sounds with my amp simulator. In all the early 70s rock, they low-passed the hack out of all the instrument parts. I guess they just liked it better that way.

Oh, my drawing pad works too.

Here’s a rough track. I just pieced it together, so there are some unwanted pops and the mix is not as smooth and tight as I would like it to be. I made it as a collaboration between records, Korg ESX-1, my mind, and Pro Tools. I experimented with some creamy side chain compression, which is almost working the way I’d like it to. I also experimented with slightly staggering the drums for “breath”. Now I just need to find some dope rapper to drip some hot spit all over it! Who should I get to rap on it? Thanks for listening dudes,

Here is a track of a piece I wrote several years ago for a video game I never made. I’m thinking about reusing it for another project. The original was simply a midi file called “swing.mid” because of it’s rhythm.

This track of music represents a tranquil place. The hero finds a location that is magical and magestic so that it makes the hero forget about the tribulatiion that awaits outside. I endeavored to record this track with real instruments to give it some life.

Instead of the epic psuedo-symphonic music or else the J-pop/ new age music that is typically featured in an RPG, I thought it would be interesting to have an RPG with kind-of a late 60s/early 70s style psychodelic acid-fusion soundtrack. Something Like this track which I recorded earlier. I set out to record a version of this that fits the style somewhat.

The drums and a bass line are still sequenced.

I used my piano, for one. I ran it through my Pod Xt guitar pedal and came-up with a retro sounding effect with a limited frequency response and a detuning effect.

The lead is a mellotron clarinet.

I added a B section in a relative minor. This is to remind the player that everything is not right and the adversary still awaits outside.

The track ends abruptly because it is meant to loop. When I test it in my game engine, it loops pretty good but not entirly seamlessly.

My initial idea for this blog was simply “a beat a day.” I was going to challenge myself to produce and post one instrumental music track a day. I soon realized it would be more fun to invite all my musical friends to post along with me.

Every day one of us will post a new song, beat, or mashup that we have created. Along with the song we will post some information about the process of creating and recording the song. The purpose of the text will be two fold: to share any new techniques that we discovered, and to share any insights into songwriting, composing, and playing music we may have had along the way. Eventually we will have built a catalog of new and eclectic music to share with the world, and ignited each other’s creativity along the way.

It’s going to take a little while for me to sort out the technical details, but you will be swimming in hella gems very soon.
